Samsung’s next-gen Note-series smartphone – Galaxy Note 9 – is now official- a premium smartphone that delivers all-day performance, a new S Pen that features connectivity for the first time ever, and Samsung’s most intelligent camera yet.
At first glance, the new Note looks like a minor update over its predecessor but there are tons of new improvements.
“The Note has always been our showcase for premium technology and industry-defining innovation, and Galaxy Note9 is no exception. It’s designed for a level of performance, power and intelligence that today’s power users want and need,”
– said DJ Koh, President, and CEO of IT & Mobile Communications Division, Samsung Electronics.
The new Note comes with the largest edge-to-edge display ever on a Note – 6.4″ in size (without a notch). The type of display is Super AMOLED Infinity display which is HDR10 compliant and supports Always On Display. It is complemented by stereo speakers, which are tuned by AKG and have the ability to support Dolby Atmos.
Commenting on the device YouTube name the Galaxy Note9 as a Signature Device which will deliver a best-in-class video experience.
There’s nothing else on the front side, no under the display fingerprint scanner which the Chinese manufacturers are using a lot nowadays. But there’s a fingerprint scanner on the rear side located under the dual camera module.
Camera module for this device includes a dual 12MP + 12MP setup – a 2.4 wide f1.4 and f/2.4 telephoto camera. Both are optically stabilized and are polished with new capabilities that take the work out of getting the perfect picture.
As we mentioned above its Samsung’s most intelligent camera yet. It will be able to detect scene and subject, optimize colors and contrast based on one of 20 categories. The camera will also be able to detect flaws such as a smudgy lens or subject that has closed his eyes.
The front sensor is the same as that of the previous generation – 8MP with f/1.7 aperture. Under the hood, there is the same Exynos 9810 Octa processor – which the company embedded in it’s Galaxy S9/S9+ flagship smartphones. Both the Note9 and S-Pen are IP68 water resistant.
The unique thing about Samsung’s Note series and the biggest reason people buy Galaxy Note phones is the S Pen which is now smarter than ever. It is now Bluetooth-enabled so you can use it as a remote shutter for the camera. You can use it up to a range of 10 meters and it will give you around 200 clicks (about 30 minutes of battery). Charging the S Pen only takes 40 seconds and now supports 3 inputs – short press, long press and double press.
The DeX has also been updated, now you no longer need a Dex Dock and a physical keyboard and a mouse – as with a single USB-C to HDMI cable you can enter your Note9 to DeX mode.
Samsung has also embedded a bigger battery this time but with outdated Quick Charge 2.0 speeds. But there’s a support for Fast Wireless Charging as well.
There are two variants of this device, one comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, which is expandable via microSD card and there’s a premium variant which comes with a whopping 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.
Color options include Ocean Blue, Midnight Black, Lavender Purple and the new Metallic Copper.
As far as the pricing goes the 6GB/128GB variant will cost around $999 while the 8GB/512GB will set you back at $1,250.
