A few days back at an event LG officially lifted the veil of a new premium smartphone from its V-series. Dubbed as LG V40 ThinQ, the device is the first to house an ultra wide and telephoto sensor. It’s all possible due to the three camera set up on the rear side.
Camera
The heart of this device resides in its camera.
As you can see in the depicted picture above the rear side houses a 3-camera setup with LED flash. A regular, an ultra-wide and telephoto camera lens. The regular one features a 12MP (27mm) sensor with f/1.5 aperture, 1.4µm, and 3-axis OIS. Thanks to OIS, low-light performance should be better. This is the first device from LG to feature Dual Pixel autofocus.
There’s one 12MP telephoto (52mm) lens as well which has a f/2.4 aperture and comes with 1.0µm pixel sensor. The lens is capable of 2x optical zoom and supports OIS and PDAF.
The third one is the 16MP ultrawide (16mm) lens with f/1.9 aperture and 1.0µm pixels. There’s no AF in this lens. This module has been borrowed from G7.
There’s also an option to capture a photo using all three cameras (almost) simultaneously. Dubbed as the Triple Shot feature, it let you create a video or a GIF out of the three images. It will guide you to a perfect “rule of thirds” composition by recognizing people in the frame.
All the three lenses feature digital image stabilization for video along with HDR recording. The top video capture mode is 4K at 60fps and there’s a 1080p at 240fps mode for cool slow-mo shots.
Display
The front side of the LG V40 ThinQ is covered with a 6.4″ FullVision QHD+ P-OLED capacitive touchscreen. The panel comes with HDR10 support and has a 19.5:9 aspect ratio.
Following the norm, this one also has a notch
The notch area houses the dual-selfie camera sensors. An 8MP sensor with f/1.9 aperture and 5MP with f/2.4. The two cameras are capable of taking studio lighting portraits among other cool effects.
It’s an 83.6% screen-to-body ratio panel which comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection.
Specifications
Under the hood there resides a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor coupled with 6GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. The storage is expandable, as it supports microSD card. The device comes with Android Oreo v8.1 running out of the box with LG’s custom launcher on top.
The device is IP68 and MIL-STD-810G certified. The phone also boasts a BoomBox speaker (sadly, just the one).
This is the first phone from LG to support wireless charging. There’s also the wired charging option via the 3.1, Type-C 1.0 reversible connector, with QuickCharge 3.0 support. The company claims that it will charge 50% in 36 minutes – not the fastest we’ve seen but pretty decent.
Connectivity option for this device includes Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct, DLNA, hotspot, Bluetooth 5.0, A2DP, LE, aptX HD, GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, NFC, and Stereo FM radio with RDS.
There’s also a fingerprint reader located on the rear side just below the trio-camera setup.
Battery
To keep the lights of the device on, the company has embedded a non-removable Li-Po 3300mAh battery which comes with fast wireless charging support – as we mentioned above.
Price & Availability
The LG V40 ThinQ will be available in the US starting from October 18 in Aurora Black (polished finish) and Moroccan Blue (sandblasted) color options. As far as the pricing goes, the device will set you back at $900.
